Double Bass Pick Up Pick up the world

I just tried putting the second element under the treble foot...sounds just like the other one. I think that with a mic this pup sounds best with just the foot element, but if you just run the pick up blending it is a nice sound. Velvets sound great with this pup. I just bought a set and while I ended up going back to my favorite strings for this bass (weichs on the bottom velvet on G...it is a very dark sounding instrument... The velvet on top takes all the whine out of it)...
I am still trying to figure out why this pup can be so Jeckel and Hyde? Sometimes it sounds so natural and full, like the best pick ups sound on nylon string guitars i.e. you can still tell it is not a mic but it has all the qualities of the sound there too, and why sometimes it sounds like a '70's barcus berry...very electricy and pinched. Playing style has a lot to do with it but I know I must be doing something wrong in the SC to get that sound.

I know you don't have one anymore, but if you are going to blend in some pickup to the signal, why not the Dyn B? Although I usually use all AKG C3000 mic or all Dyn B, I did use both one time on a loud outdoor gig where the mic didn't seem to have enough oomph with good results.

Cos it's a lot of money. For what I want it for, it's overkill. If money was not an issue I probably would have kept the one I sold.

I've decided to send my PUTW back. I can't see myself dealing with the mess of wires. I just don't have time to deal with it anymore.
So it's back to the Realist for my Kay and for my Eminence. I've got my Bass Max and an Underwood as well if the situation dictates.
I've had enough of buying pickups for the time being!

You have me beat by a couple of decades of pickup buying, but I bet I've tried just about all of them that have been around since the late 70's. Here's the list:
Barcus Berry, the metal one that stuck to the bridge with sticky putty stuff.
Polytone, the brass one that hung between the bridge legs.
Underwood, I'm on my second one of these, still the "old pro's" choice for jazz here in Los Angeles.
The Realist, it's good! I've bought and used two of them, three if you count the modified Realist that comes standard with the Eminence Bass.
KK Bass Max, I have bought two. Great for easy install and removal, sounds pretty good.
KK Golden Trinity, a great little mic for the money.
Stat-B.
Mose Lace Magnetic.
Clevinger Natural Presence, used it on a big band gig, once. I can't remember if I sold it or if it's still around the house somewhere, but it hasn't been on either of my DB's for about two years, and I don't miss it.
Fishman Full Circle.
Biesele Magnetic Pickup, not my cup of tea.
And finally, the PUTW.
Plus the Raven Labs and KK Pre-Amps.
I used to own a Polytone 101 Bass Amp, my Dad bought for me brand new in the 70's, when I was a teenager, he's not a rich man, been in retail auto parts all of his life. We didn't have money back then, so he bought it on credit and we made monthly payments. When I blew it's 15 inch speaker, while playing electric bass with a Mutron (Bootsy Baby Ba-Ba!) Polytone gave me a loner to use while they fixed mine, Ray Brown's name was stenciled on it's side, it was one of Ray's that they kept for him at the factory, that was pretty exciting for me, because even back then, I knew he was the real deal. Once I got my amp back I kept it until about 1992, money was tight so it had to go, I miss that amp to this day.
I've now got a mint condition 60's Ampeg Flip Top SB-12, it's my museum piece, a Clarus, Raezors Edge and own and love my second of two Walter Woods heads. But to tell you the truth, I could have played any gig in town with just an Underwood and a Polytone and sounded just fine, still could, as a matter of fact!

I do have to say about this pup that I am getting fed up with the microphonics of the wires. If they touch anything they make a very harsh sound, Someone needs to really redesign this type of pick up for real bass situations cause it aint ready for primetime. I've had pick ups on my bass for years that have not caused me this much of a pain. I think I am going to throw the realist back on there for a while unless someone out there has a used Full Circle they are willing to part with?
Thanks for the muting advice...I put some foam in there between the strings and low and behold something I thought was going to mess up the open resonance of my bass, just cut out all the imbalanced ringing overtines and more importantly the buzzes...Really thanks to whoever mentioned the vibramute thing...

Look on eBay for a Full Circle. I got a new one there for $130 just today. There's none there right now but things appear all the time.
Shortly after I ordered my Full Circle yesterday, I was doing further research and wondering if I'd made a mistake. Reading all these stories of how the thing is held together by a tiny bit of glue or pressure from the bridge and how in a number of instances, the bridge "collapsed". I sincerely hope these are just installations that were not optimal. I find so many pickups to be flimsy and fragile on installation which is why I've steered clear of most of them and I definitely don't want wires hanging all over the place.
I agree with you on the microphonic properties of the PUTW wires, but OTOH, I haven't had a bit of trouble with them since I had them shortened to eliminate the excess length. I'm still using it and relatively happy with it.flatback said:
