I have a Fender jazz bass with active single wound coil pick-ups. Would there be any advantage in changing them out for double wound coils?

Are you sure they are single coil? Fender has made several Jazz-sized humbuckers, the most recent being the "split-coil." If they are truly single coil, like a passive J-bass, the greatest advantage is to get rid of single coil hum and noise. The new Fender split-coil J-pickups should work great.

I've heard only good reports on the Fender Super 55 Jazz bass pickups (split coil hum cancel).

I haven't tried them yet.

I do like the Dimarzio Area J pickups I am using (split coil hum cancel).

More pole pieces doesn't necessarily mean it's a humbucker, though it certainly could be.
