i know people have said it already. but, a pick is just another tool! i played for 8 years before i decided to give a pick a try. because i used to think, its only for punk players and they use it cause they don't know how to play properly. Well, i was wrong! i felt like an idiot the first time i tried playing with a pick. i was fumbling all over the place and never seemed to hit the string right. So, then my respect went up for all those other players. And then i though, wow who am i to say they're dumb because they don't do something like me? Exactly, im not! Everyone has their own style that gets the sound they want. Now, there are the players that say this is my sound and im sticking to it. Just because they're to lazy to try and figure something out. And that can be a problem. But, not that i gave the pick a try. I use it all the time! It obviously doesn't work for everything and I don't think it should. But if i never picked one up (haha) i would still be searching in my head how to get the sound that i can get with a pick. So that being said, its just a tool! not everyone uses a philips screwdriver, but if you have one and know how to use it! You can get a lot more work done!

I mainly use a pick because i play guitar too.

I love the sound of a fingerplucked string when you pluck it at about the 15th fret with your right hand...

a pick is just another tool...its like choosing between pizzicato and arco on an upright. when i want a nice, flowing, articulated, and voice-like sound i play with a bow. when i want a cutting, driving bass sound ill play with a pick. i prefer fingerstyle because thats what feels most natural to me and really that should be what decides it. people that play with picks dont necessarily have poor technique, its just that you get a lot of these frustrated guitarist types that play bass with a pick very poorly. there are many wonderful bassists who play with a pick and have amazing technique.
