Pickguard over flamed maple?

I have a new Status on order that is gonna have a transparent aqua blue flamed maple top. I'm debating at the moment with myself whether I want a black pickguard on it... I'm thinking that I prefer the look of basses with pickguards, but I can't recall seeing a pickguard on a nice top before.

Has anyone got a bass with a transparent finish fancy wood top and a pickguard?

Take a look at the Sadowsky site. Go to 'in stock', then to NYC, then to 'recently sold'. There will be a lot of 'fancy top with pickguard' bassed for you to look at.

My feeling on the matter is why bother getting a beautiful figured top when you are going to put a pickguard on it!! Show it off man!!

OR get a clear pickguard!

with blue i've always liked black or that cream tortoiseshell looking stuff...but a wooden one (pref flame maple) that's finished the same colors as your bass would be cool....it would be like antigua only with blue flamed maple if you could lightly burst the pickguard at the edges.

What kind of Status bass? I have never seen an S2 with a pickguard which is what your profile says you have on order. Will Rob even do a pickguard on those?

Yeah, S-2. I've asked Rob if its possible to do a pickguard like on the old Shark basses, but he hasnt gotten back to me yet. Here is a terribly photoshopped (okay, okay, MS paint!) idea of what I want it to look like:

Obviously, that bass isn't quite what I'm getting as its a 4 string (I'm getting a 5), and its not flamed maple (mine will be flamed maple on a walnut back), but its the colour I'm going for so you get the idea.

Pretty Sweet. I asked him if he could do that on the Smartbass and he told me he couldn't because of the carved top. That will be one cool looking bass for sure. I would go with a clear guard but the black doesn't look bad at all. My kid has a Modulus with a AAAAA Quilt top and a black pickguard and it's pretty cool looking, I think.

I think you're the first person thats agreed with me there! Most of the people on the Status forum think I will be commiting a cardinal sin putting a pickguard on an S-2... I think it will look pretty rockin'

I do hear what you're saying, but because the S-2 has quite a wide body, I think it helps "break it up" a bit. If it were a slimmer body like a Jazz I would probably leave it, but, I dunno, it just looks a bit too open for me without the guard...
