Pickguard question

What would be the best way to shave a pickguard a tiny bit? I recieved my jazz pickguard in the mail today and the dang thing is overlapping the control plate a tiny bit, screw holes line up pretty good so I figured I would just shave it down instead of getting a new one, suggestions?

The vinyl pickguard material is very soft. A coarse file is the simplest tool to use for trimming it. To smooth out the edges after filing, scrape them with something like the edge of a pen knife blade. Don't sand the edges. The abrasive particles will embed in the soft plastic and make a grayish edge.
