Alrighty, over the next few months I'm looking into a new bass rig. So I'd like to buy either a Rickenbacker 4001 or Fender Jazz bass with block inlays. I'm leaning towards the Ric since I've always wanted to own one, have played several and dig the tone and sound. As far as jazz bass I was considering a Geddy Lee. Which Geddy bass is the best quality? I think there's a Korean, Japan and Mexican made model. I've never actually played a Geddy bass for more than a minute. I have played American Jazz basses. So I'm looking for folks that own both a Ric and American Jazz or geddy jazz to reply. I'd probably spend 2000. If i spend less on a bass I can have extra for an amp upgrade. I've got some financing worked out in the family and would be using it towards serious pro upgrades. That's the plan anyway. I'd probably be buying a used ric. Thanks folks!

Picking Out A New Bass. ...input. Rickenbacker Vs Jazz

I'm not a p bass guy. Not interested in a p.
I've had both and prefer a J over the Rick but that a preference of mine. I think the J can come closer to sounding like a Rick then vice versa. The USA Geddy would save you around $500 too spend on something else.
Having owned all three, my vote goes towards one of the J-basses. My MIJ Geddy was awesome. I'm willing to bet the new MIA Geddy is probably killer, based on the specs. And of course a Ric is a Ric. It's a win-win no matter what you decide, IMHO.
I don't even know where my head is. I didn't even know they made a new MIA Geddy. Anyone have links/pictures?
For the past 20 years I have owned one Jazz and one Rick. Love them both and would never give them up. That said, a few years ago when I was in a financial bind, it was the Rick that went to the pawnshop as collateral. I never, ever, would have taken my Jazz.
With that said, if you have a Squire Jazz now and like it (a decent one I assume, not an Affinity), get the Rick.

I had a classic vibe but the neck went to poopie when i got it(mad) and had to exchange it for an Indonesian affinity...sounds pretty good though I think I got a gem. I'd probably get a classic vibe and still score a ric.
Definitely an apples and oranges decision, completely different animals. Get the Ric and a Squier VM Jazz and call it good.
Can't beat a VM Jazz. I was dumb and returned mine to the store.
There are some killer 4001's out there that can cut through the mix like a knife. But with 4001's, you have to know what you are looking for. A new 4003 is a good value and a great bass. Don't pay attention to prices on dealers websites. A new 4003 can probably be had for around $1500. Ric also re-introduced the 4003S at NAMM and those are supposed to be priced less, but I don't know when the 4003Ss will be in dealers hands.
If you've played Ricks before, and are comfortable with them; and you're willing to put up with their quirks & foibles (and they do have them - I know; I have a 4001 and a 4003), then get one, by all means. Otherwise, get another VM Jazz, and call it good. But, personally, I would prefer a P-Bass; really like mine.
When you actually have 2K$ to spend, you should pretty much know what you want. Opinions are way to varied. You like ricks and know what they can do. Same with jazz. A rick might sell faster if you don't like it in your hands.. Ergonomically very different feel. I had a 4003 and didn't dig it.
