I was trying to use an old pedal with my new EUB for the first time tonight and was noticing a lot of extra hiss.
My new EUB has a wonky output jack (which is something I will soon fix) and I thought that was the source of the hiss, so as I was adjusting the cable, I pulled it out just enough that the cable stayed supported in the jack, but not plugged in enough to where I could get an output from the instrument. At this point, I started hearing country music in my headphones, and it was amazingly clear. Turned out to be from a radio station 102.9 FM.
At this time, I was going direct from the EUB to my older Tascam US-122L Audio Interface, which is plugged into my Laptop (which had the charging cable plugged in) via a USB 2.0 cable.
I later realized that the extra hiss was from me having the Input knob on my IsB Interface fully up (whereas I normally have it at 90%).
I couldn’t recreate the radio station phenomenon by plugging into my two bass guitars, but could recreate it pretty reliably in my EUB. Also, my reason for saying that this jack was already a bit wonky is because I get no output if I plug it in fully. It has to be pulled out just a tad. It also feels a little loose.
Other than fixing the jack, I suspect I will need to shield the instrument, but this did get me wondering if there’s anything else at play here… Like should I look at replacing my old USB Interface? I was getting hiss through it when the Input knob was above 90% regardless.
