It's two huge rabbit holes you're about to jump into.

There are a lot of different kinds of pickups. There are a lot of different kinds of amps. We all have our favorite combinations and we all have our own reasons for those favorites.

Generally it would help if you could tell us what kind of double bass your wife has including its size and whether it is a plywood bass, a carved bass or a hybrid. And what kind of music she plays or is expecting to play. And what kind of instruments she expects to play along with.

My best recommendation to start out with this is to visit Gollihur Music's (NFI) very informative library sections about "Pickups and Microphones" and "Amps and Preamps" and read, read read. Then the recommendations that people present here will make some sense to you.

What is her typical playing situation? Loud environment, like a pub/bar? Does her bass have an adjustable bridge?

I've had experience with 3 pickups.

• K&K Bass Max - cheap, easy to install, electric bass sound
• Realist - big step (to my ears) toward the actual sound of the bass
• Full Circle - I stopped looking at pickups when I got this one. My bass amped sounds like my bass un-amped. Downside is that you will most likely require a bridge fitted for the pickup.
