Pickup dimensions-measurement?

Looking for some new pups.I know nothing about installing new hardware & i've come across some EMG's & Dunkan's i like that measure 2-5mm more or less from my stock ones, regarding width, length etc...How much of a problem is this?

If the pickups are smaller than the cavities on your bass, then it's just a matter of how much gap is unsightly to you.

If the reverse is true, then you have bigger problems....

It's not hard if you have a DIY spirit, but not everybody does.

Also, and you may already have considered this, but different strings can have just as much effect on your tone as different pickups.
