Pickup height/strings

Is there a set distance for the distance between the strings and pickups? And do you think it makes a massive difference?
Lately my band Port Erin have dropped everything by a semitones and with the extra slack I'm catching my strings on the pickups - when I dig in for a punchy pluck.... so going to lower them a bit, might experiment a bit, but just wondered people's thoughts on here.

Closer = More aggressive sound
Further = More "vintage" sound
Choose what you like. If you're hitting the pickups there's only one choice. Well, you could raise the strings so sort of 2 choices.
