Pickup opinions for jazz bass

looking for a nice set of pickups to add to a swamp ash bass im building, something thats in the $150 range for a set & will work well with a bartolini preamp setup & also something that is very versatile, the preamp will have the push pull active passive knob.
i was thinking dimarzios but someone told me with the active circuit they get distorted....he recommended the duncan quarter poundset
also i was told whatever i get to also upgrade to the 2- 9volt box so my juice lasts longer & i was told the pups sound more clear.
opinions?

Would go for Duncan qp. I have a jazz with the SD stacked hot set, with the Bartolini 918 pre-amp. Amazing sound. Clear and studio quality sound and very versatile. My bass has the single 9v.

Which Dimarzio's were you thinking about? Dimarzio Area J's have a nice, smooth vintage tone (think Jerry Jemmott) and seem to work well with preamps; here's a video of a guy using them with an 18 volt Bartolini preamp:

Keep in mind that QP pickups are a love or hate thing. Many Jazz Bass purists (count me in) think they are aweful while some will tell you they are the shnitz.
Let's say that if you like a scooped sound with no character, just a big blob of bass and glassy highs type of sound, they are perfect. If you like the traditional growl of a Jazz Bass you might not like them.
DiMarzio Area J are a safest investment as you rarely see negative on them.

Whoever told you the Dimarzio will distort with an active circuit basically has no idea what they are talking about. While I really dislike the Q pound P pickups, I don't mind the Jazz pickups but they still aren't great. Personally any of the Dimarzio options will be better with a preamp because they are split coil, noiseless pickups so you are not boosting hum frequencies if you roll off your neck or bridge pickup.
