Double Bass Pickup/Pre-Amp Combo HELP!!!

I am bluegrasser looking for a pickup/preamp combo and am willing to spend around $400. Any suggestions as to what to buy. I'm sure ya'll see this question all the time but I really need help, the more research I do the more confused I become.

ALSO... Has anyone reviewed the SOLO Revolution II pickup by uptonbass?? Curious about that also.

Jason, if you want to dig on your own a bit, go here. Among many other splendid things, there is a link there to a mega-thread on the Rev Solo.

I currently use a Rev Solo II blended w/ a mic for jazz and I like it. The Full Circle pickup from Fishman is also very popular, at least w/ people who frequent this forum.

Each pickup sounds different on every bass. Hence your mileage may vary (YMMV) is one of the only steadfast rules. You may have to try several p/u's before you find the one you like best. I'm on my fourth p/u, and third mic.

You might not need a preamp. Depends a lot on what amp you have. How loud you need to go is also an important factor. If you click on 'My TalkBass' up in the left hand corner and fill out your profile w/ your gear and gigs, it's very helpful for the rest of us for that type stuff.
