Pickup that catches all harmonics?

The clips sound amazing. I'd say you pretty much gave the pickup design a whole new turn, pun intended. I don't think I've ever seen coils with the number of windings and overall resistance that low, though the position reminds me of what Bartolini did with their Ric mute compartment pickup.

I'd still say making a set of split-coil J-pups isn't a lost cause - now that you've tapped into the pool of harmonics at the bridge, you might be able to get new tones out of the bass just by messing with the different coil groupings - or, heck, maybe even trying something with a bladed or twin-bladed design - maybe that'd capture quite a bit more of the sound?

On another note - wonder how the pickup would sound in the mudbucker position, nailed onto the neck...

Sounds pretty "wire-y." Where are you plucking on the samples? at the P-pup, or closer to the bridge?

I'm playing around the stock pickup. I am playing with a heavy celluloid pick. It sounds a little bit less zingy if I play with my fingers.

I'm also tempted to throw some flats on there for a bit, and see how that sounds.

it does sound like you've captured lots of harmonics...it can probably be blended in to a conventional location to bring "character"...

as a main source of sound, however, I'm not convinced yet...

Yeah, it's still got some work to go. It would work well blended I'm sure. I'd also like to try some comb filtering, and maybe a light slope high-cut to tame it a bit.

Thanks, I'm really kind of amazed that it's working as well as it is. It hasn't taken a lot of tweaking yet, and I'm sure there's still room for improvement.

A conventional pickup probably wouldn't even work with that few turns, and even if it did, it would be super sensitive to cabling and the input impedance of the amplifier. I do wonder though what the coils are like on EMG pickups and the like. I wouldn't be surprised if they're quite low as well. They do supposedly share a similar insensitivity to hum, etc.

Well, a split J probably won't do much for me. In a normal pickup, the coil is doing a lot of tone shaping because of its inductance. Because my coils are so low inductance, they're really not having any effect on the sound at all, they're just picking it up "hi-fi". Configuration doesn't really matter much, unless i'm setting up a second coil at a different position, which will give some cancellations.

Well, with a different preamp, and weak magnets, it would probably sound alright. Like an ordinary single coil mounted at the neck, but with more high frequency response, and without the peak in the midrange.

With the current magnets, the strings would stick to them, and even if you dealt with that, the equalization would have to be removed, or you would get unmanageable amounts of low frequency rendering it completely useless.

I probably will make some pickups with smaller magnets. The preamp is trivial. I can use exactly the same board layout, I just skip the filter components and change a couple resistor values. That's getting a bit off topic to the thread though.

Now that you mention getting sound all hi-fi - did you try wax-potting one of your prototypes? The reason I'm asking is that it'd be pretty big trouble if the pickup was getting all the sound due to microphonics.

I haven't bothered potting it yet, since I'm still tinkering, but I'm sure the results aren't due to microphonics. I can actually thump on them pretty hard, and not hear anything. It probably helps that the wire is 32Ga. I can wind it a whole lot tighter than you can with 42Ga.

In the end I'll probably epoxy pot them, though I may just stick to wax for the prototypes.

I still need to build a vacuum chamber for decent epoxy potting.

I've messed with this a bit more, and since realized that it's quite lacking in fundamental on everything but the E string. It always seemed a little unbalanced volume-wise too. It looks like my reasoning was just flawed, and the frequency response will only be corrected for the lowest string.

To continue with this idea, I'm going to have to make an individual coil for each string. Well, at least I got a little more idea of the kind of sounds I should be able to get out of it when I'm finished. :) Gives a little more motivation to build the more complicated preamp and coils.
