I tried a PUTW bass pickup several years ago and thought it sounded pretty good but had problems with electrical hum depending on where I was plugging in. It was bad enough that the experiment ended quickly.

Right! These have been around for 15+ years. Well before I started spending too much time here I pulled the quote below from one of the PUTW threads. It pretty much says everything I need to know about this pickup.

'I actually liked the sound of the PUTW pickup. However, I found it to be the most fragile pickup I've ever owned. The maker was very good about replacing the defective/broken pickups, but after going thru three of them in about 3 months, I moved on to a Full Circle mixed with an AMT mic. I think I liked the sound from the PUTW better than the Full Circle, but the FC is far more durable.'
