First,
I know all there is to know about this bass as far as what is posted here on TB.
I have discovered there are several mixed opinions about these pickups or preamp or the bass in general.
So here is mine:
I LOVE the way this thing plays! It plays and feels just great...unplugged.
I am not happy with how it records or plays through the amp. Some people love the Lace Sensors, some don't. I don't. I have given this thing like two years of off and on playing. I have carried it as my backup bass and my alternate tuned bass (for that ONE song the singer just has to do in some weird ass tuning!).
So I have played it off and on for a while trying it and trying to let "its" sound "grow" on me...but it hasn't.
I put it on here and on my local CL for sale/trade (for an American P-bass 4-string)...yet still no takers. No worries though. As I said, I love playing it. I just want it to sound better and more dynamic plugged in.
So I'm going through different pickup reviews and different preamp reviews trying to decide if I want to mix and match or pick an entire set up that comes together.
Then I think...
You know. I bet the entire electronic infrastructure isn't bad. I bet I only "dislike" either the preamp part of the chain or the pickup part.
I looked up Kubicki and he seemed to get raving reviews for the work he done with Fender in the 90's.
And Lace Sensor seems to make great products (especially in the guitar world) also.
My question is:
Which one of these should I keep?
Which one is going to have a more tonal change in my sound?
Which one will give me more output and control?
Should I keep the Kubicki preamp and just add new pickups?
OR
Should I keep the pickups and replace the preamp?
Ideas/suggestions/opinions?
Thanks
P.S. Here are a few pictures of the pickups and knobs in case you don't know what these basses look like.
