Pickups that Sound like a Ric?

Ric5 and I both live in Denver, & we both own multiple Rickenbackers.
He was nice enough to show me his collection a while back, and while I was there we played a few of his "FrankenFenders" and "FenderBirds" - home built maple bodied basses with single-coil pickups.
The pickups in some of these basses were placed at the same spacing from the bridge that Ric uses, and he showed me that you can indeed get suprisingly Ric-like tones out of a non-Ric bass, epecially if you use maple for the body & use single coil pickups w/Ric-style pickup spacing.

Isn't that Yamaha Attitude the Billy Sheehan bass? He ran stereo. Another Geddy Lee fan.....
I used to dig that nasty snarly tone he got form his old P-Bass back in the Talas and DLR days.

Yep! Luckily I only sold it to my dad, so I still have access to it when I need it.

I was just listening to some Talas yesterday in fact. I guess I never listened to it with headphones before, because I noticed on some songs he has the neck pickup going through the center channel (big and fat and low), and the P pickup hard panned to the left (sharp and snarly), with the guitar hard panned right. Sounded awesome and made the mix a lot fuller than most one guitar bands.

Stereo does seem to make a mix more "big" sounding. All of that control over tone and the seperation makes for some huge sound if one wants.
