Pickups too hot? Boss TU-3 issues

Hello all,
I have a Jazz bass with some cheap EMG Select passive pickups (using a 1969 Ampeg B-25 and an Ampeg 4x10 cab) . While using my Boss TU-3, the tuner picks up all the instruments in the room, as opposed to just my bass. A friend of mine, who installed the pickups for me, said they are too hot.

Would there be something I could do on the tuner itself to be able to use it without asking for all my bandmates to be quiet? This makes the tuner all-but unusable in a live environment.

Thanks, so much!
-PJ

I had similar issues with my tu-3, especially after I traded up to quarter pounders for my pickups. I ended up (for pure tonal reasons, unrelated to the tuner issue) re -shielding my control cavity a few months later, and changed the entire grounding circuitry at the same time, which not only helped my tone, but improved the tuner too. Still gets abit jumpy if everyone is playing full blast, but very usable.

you've got something wired wrong.

EMG "selects" are not especially hot, and besides, if they were, the tuner would likely work better as it would hear more signal and less background noise.

tuners get thrown off by stray noise and especially 60-cycle hum.
