Can someone describe the sound of piezo pickup, and what type of basses are currently sold with them so I can hear it myself.

I can describe it as "acoustic-like". Go to my sound clips page and listen to the piezo clips from my Surine bass, found at the bottom of that page.

does anyone know, can you use a standard bart or ag preamp.... or do you need a special pre beacuse of the impedance, and then match it with the other onboard pre?

My Surine originally had a Bartolini piezo/mag buffer and a three-band EQ after that. Now it only has the buffer.
And I would recommend a proper piezo buffer - because of the impedance, as you say. You could of course try without, it might be all right depending on how the pre-amp is designed, but I wouldn't count on it.

I'm a big fan of piezo sounds. Yes, it resembles the sound of unamplified instrument, but has the lows when properly buffered. Piezo lows are deeper than magnetic, but not as prominent, because magnetic pickups tend to emphasize mids and low-mids. Highs are clear enough to bring up fret noise.

thanks for the sound clips! i just ordered a set of graph tech saddles 
the hard part is going to be running them with the mags and either my ac guitars or an alembic pre...both graph tech and fishman have products to integrate it all (i need a pre for the mag pups, as they are very low impedance). i'll check out that bart buffer...

One of them broke after my bass has fallen. Until then the sound was great. Also had minor problems with hum.
