PIGS - Andrew Schneider tone

Hi,

I’d like to get in the tone ballpark of Andrew Schneider on the Pigs album, You Ruin Everything. The emphasis being on “ballpark”.

I can’t find much info on his gear. He seems like a bit of a legend. Some great bands he’s in and/or produced but I absolutely love that PIGS album.

any thoughts?

Probably. It just sounds extra chunky.

Yes I’d say a RAT is a likely suspect. I love that “cinder block scraped across concrete” vibe. I’m sure it has a bunch to do with whatever cab and head he’s running plus being a bit of a legend. Maybe I just wanted to fanboy out about PIGS a little bit.

I gave a look on their facebook, all I really found out is he is using a P-bass in all of the pics, I saw some pedals but couldn't tell at all what they were or if they really even the bassist pedals.

I would say listening to it, RAT would get you in the park.
I am a (very bad) shoegaze bassist, I mess around with fuzz, distortion a bit here and there. In the end I say tried to get your own sound likes. Nothing wrong of course following your favorites, personally I love the MXR bass fuzz deluxe and big muffs.

For Rat on bass, I use an MXR Bass Distortion, which is a simplified version of the Fuzzrocious Cat Tail. Rats are great but they don’t have much low end for bass.

No way on the whole Rat thing. I would bet that Andrew is using an RB with a Pbass. A lot of Andrews stuff either production wise or whatever sounds distinctly like Tronographic to me. The rat loses to much low end. I will say that the Blower Box (might as well be Blackie) is really great but also not it. I do love those though. I also really like a lot of the Zero Fret rat variants, but I don't think that any of those are responsible for Andrew's sound. Andrew is responsible for so much good stuff. He really is amazing. Hopefully your thread won't get further derailed.

It sounds pretty close to the bass sound I have on our new record. I am using an RB with a V4B into a Berg NV412.

Yeah Andrew produced a friend's record recently he's apparently very nice and accessible.

Sounds like a drop-tuned P-bass, through heavy distortion (maybe Rat) with a clean blend.

Well I emailed Andrew as suggested and being the top chap he is, he provided as much info as he could recall.

"... My guess is for this record (and my general setup back then) - I used a GK800RB through a 2x15 Mesa Diesel Cab. At the time I was big on using 15" speakers because so many people were stuck on 10"'s. I felt the bigger speakers captured the grind of it all in a more natural way. I was most likely using a Proco Deuce-tone which is two Rat pedals built into one pedal. I have always leaned on RAT pedals. I feel like I control a lot naturally in the playing and still have the "hate sound" when running through the RATs. Neither the amp, cab or pedal help with boosting low end that much so I am pretty sure I had to add some on the board during mixing. The Rat's in particular cut a fair amount of low end so it has to be made up somewhere. I am sure I also had the low and low mid on the amp set to 10. The other big factor was the bass. I have an old 1979 American P-bass that is a crazy heavy piece of wood. I use Bare Knuckle Pickups which were also kind of a game changer for me when I installed them."
