Pino, Paul young, which chorus, which octaver?

Hi all.

I've been lucky enough to be subbing in Paul Youngs band.

I've been borrowing the main bassplayer's board so far, but would like my own.

Supposedly the Arion sch-1 is one of the choruses Pino used with Paul, and that's the one that's one the board.
One option is finding one of those used, but that's not too easy.

So if I have to go the "new" route, which chorus would you get to cop that tone? Tc, Carl Martin, analog man? Give me all your suggestions :-)

Also, the same goes for the octaver, boss oc-2. I was thinking maybe the aguilar octamizer could do it? I already have the ebs octabass on my other board.

Awesome gig, congrats !!

I know there's a thread somewhere with a description of his gear, but I just can't seem to locate it. I'm thinking OC-2, but not really sure. I had an MXR BOD for a awhile and the manual had a Pino setting that was quite convincing. But I do know Ashdown just issued a signature Pino octave. Those 2 pedals seem like a nice place to start looking. Can't help on the chorus.

Definitely the OC-2. The Aguilar Octamizer is a great pedal but not right for this application. The MXR can cop the OC-2 sound very closely and has some added versatility (Girth knob, mids switch, the ability to reach unity gain on a soloed octave) but doesn't track as well as the Boss.

I love the Analogman but it may not be the right chorus for this job. You want that cold 80's chorus so a Boss CEB-3 could work well. Personally I'd use the Iron Ether Polytope (single voice, relatively low detune amount, no pitch modulation) for that sound.

If you have a store near you that has the MXR Analog Chorus, give that one a test run. It has all the rich, lush chorusing of thick choruses like the Boss CE-5, but without that digital harshness. I don't think you'll be disappointed. I've had a long term love/hate relationship with Chorus until I tried this one. :D

Thanks guys.

I listened to the ash down on their site,. They have a sound bit, where "wherever i lay my hat" is quoted. But it doesn't sound right to me.

Offcourse i will have to see if I can try it in a shop :-)

Keep the advice coming :-)

Jared, I believe you are right on everything except that it is the IE Polytope not the xerograph. And yes it would be awesome for what the op is going for.

Ashdown effects suck.

Also the Iron Ether pedal that Jared was recomending is the Polytope (Xerograph is a Low Pass Filter)

edit: Sterl beat me

Not enough coffee today apparently. Thanks for the correction guys - I edited my original post.

I still have my prototype Polytope (Taylor made a couple small changes for the production model) and I use it for pretty much everything.

With a fretless and an octaver for a synthy 80's tone? Forget about it - it doesn't get any better than OC-2 into Polytope.
