PJ Club

I'd like to join. Just got this about a month ago and I think it's going to stick around for a while. Loving the P punch with the added growl of the jazz bridge pup.

This pic was taken by the previous owner. I'm probably going to swap the gold hardware for chrome so it matches the tuners and inlays better.

I'm gonna be honest with you guys, I don't love my PJ but I can't live without it. My go to bass these days is a AVRI 57 with TI flats, I love that bass. I also love my 60s style jazz bass with rounds. The mod'd PJ AV58 is alder/maple and wears a set of Labella DTFs, it falls in the middle and is the compromise when I need both.

For a brief period I had one of those late 90's trans orange ash/rosewood PJs and it had one of the best PJ vibes I've ever heard but really kind of stunk at being a P bass. There is just a compromise in either over winding the J or underwinding the P that I haven't found the perfect medium on.

Anyone try a tonestyler in a PJ with success?

Is that one of the recent Fender special run basses? As I understand it the P pickup is a bit north of the standard location, how much does that alter the tone of the P?

Looks like a beauty

Yes, it's a recent Special Run bass (I believe they made only 75 for that run). I've heard the P placement is slightly north as well, but I have not measured it. Sounds (and plays) great, so that's all I really care about! ;-)

To expand on your question (and my answer), the P tone is big and warm, but NOT muddy at all. Strange, but even sounds good when I slap. Great bass and tone fo sho!
PRECISELY>>>+1...except the slapping, it's an allergy I have. I love mine...same config, different model...I LOVE THE BINDING ON YOURS!!! It is easily my favorite out of my 3 P/J's, perhaps due to the P pickup placement. Yours' is a beauty (I saved the pic in my bass porn;)), enjoy that baby!
