Placement of my DI Box.

I usually keep my passive DI box on my board, right after my vt bass pedal. It has always worked.

I've been playing quite a bit more gigs and a few times, the soundguy asked me to put my DI box near my rig. Doesn't bother me.

On my board, 3 inches of cable separate the VT bass from the DI.

Adding the several feet of cable from my VT Bass, to my DI, will I experience any signal loss?

Given that you use a decent cable, no signal loss should happen. But if the cable is too long and you do experience some signal loss, all you need to do is raise the volume of the VT Bass.

Why does he want the DI box closer to the amp, is it just because it's convenient for him and he has a cable that only reaches that far? If so, I'd rather add my own XLR cable from the DI on the pedalboard as an extension over to his cable, rather than use a long unbalanced instrument cable from the pedalboard to the DI. Two reasons; so the DI can stay on the pedalboard, and because the longer the cable, the more need for it to be balanced.

In theory that is ... in practice there will likely not be much of a difference unless the cables are quite long, maybe you'll start hearing a difference at 15 feet or longer.

That's typically been my experience. A lot of venues these days have the end of their snake at the back of the stage, and can potentially get grumpy if you specify that your DI is out front on your pedalboard. I like your idea of running your own XLR from the DI back to the amp for the soundguy to connect to. I prefer my JDI to the one in my amp, and this would keep the soundguy happy, at least in terms of placement.
