It's always interesting to hear from the "we do it our way, there is so much more credibility and authenticity in that" crowd.
However, most local bands I hear doing it "their way" are objectively butchering the song. They don't have the musicianship and arrangement skills to improve on the original. They are only fooling themselves and the drunks.
Most band's aren't doing it "their way." They are just to lazy to learn the song. There is a big difference. Leaving out the signature licks, playing wrong chords, playing wrong rhythms, missing changes - that's not an arrangement, it's just being too lazy to care.
I played with a drummer that used to whine about playing songs like the original. He kept saying we should do it "our" way. I finally got sick of it and called him on it. I told him that playing the song the same half fast way he'd been playing it for 40 years wasn't "our" way, it was just because he was too lazy to learn it right.
I hate it when people try to dignify their laziness by called it "an arrangement."
