Play Gig, Get Barred From Venue

ABC doesn't play around here in Virginia. "Outside" purchases are verboten in bars and private clubs. Correction: you can bring a bottle into a private club but beer purchases must be made on site. One band member was seen bringing in beer by the club manager. We apologized profusely and fired the band member for a number of infractions including this incident. We don't play around, either.

i was made to drink my coke outside of a venue in kalamazoo. the place wasn't even open yet. we load in start setting up & the dude freaks about beer which we didn't have & was adament about my coke being out of the venue immediatly. i thought it was a bit much.

i know about not bringing beers but soda? is soda in the same catagory as beer as far as a bar is concerned?

I don't think soda counts. My singer carries 2 gallon jugs of water to every gig. No problem.

Not sure how Oregon compares to Ireland, but around here, the liquor control board is extremely strict.

They like to run "sting" operations with underage decoys. Even if you're trying hard to comply, you usually wind up with an infraction and a stiff fine, from time to time.

If you're not trying hard, you'll inevitably get the liquor license suspended, which usually proves to be fatal to most bars & even restaurants.

So, bogus as it is, I can understand why venue staff react to some petty code violation as if one were trying to dynamite the place.

you might as well have tested out those blasphemy laws you've got over there just now, crazy times. i can see why theyd not have you drinking something not bought, but throwing you out after doing the place a favour is way over the top.

no it's pretty standard in CT. I give them the eyebrow when they expect me to pay full price (if at all) for beer. Of course, I have 2 or 3 tops. I have found that a place that won't give you a drink or two is often not worth playing at for a variety of other reasons far more salient than that. Call it an overall trend with that establishment.

Ive played a few places that didnt give two winks about us drinkig our own beer inside. We used to play at one art gallery that sold alcohol to anyone. They didnt have a license to do so and regularly sold to minors. The owner gave some guff to my synth player about bringing in his own tall can, cuz he could 'get in trouble', to which my synth player replied that he was sure that selling alcohol to minors would get him in much more.

My band always brings our own beer to the gigs, but we usually just drink it outside.

This ties in with several other threads about playing for free.

You should always be professional in your demeanor, even if you are just a bunch of local guys who play at a bud's bar for fun. So, that mean's you bring your equipment, and nothing else. You negotiate with the bar for liquor. Hell, they can provide water for free, they all have faucets.

If they won't comp you some liquid or at least give you the $1 a beer for the band, then just don't play there again. But never bring your own stuff.
