Play New Year's Eve for regular Bar Pay, or No?

This thread needs a Poll!

and for what its worth, No Sir, not your Nelly.
It shouldn't have even been a thread in the first place.

The OP will play the gig because his bandmates, who actually know the whole situation, decided it was acceptable...

the OP wants to do it,

and hopefully he won't be a jerk and dogg his buddies because you guys are a bunch of internet badasses... many/most of whom probably don't even gig.

I just hope the OP takes some pics to share. :cigar:

Differentiate between offers and requests, and proceed accordingly. The bar owner in question did not make an offer.

No, I really don't "want" to play it. I think it's bad form for a band to play too cheaply. I "will" play it to keep my bandmates happy, though.

Screw "form"- you're not part of a form, you're an individual dealing with a specific circumstance, and no other musicians will be harmed.

I bet you and your band will have a good time.

Please post pics. :bassist:

Wow. Tough crowd. I'm in a rather small minority here in TB as money doesn't equate to my love of playing music with people who wanna play music with other people, but I'd take the gig assuming the rest of the band was cool with it and no one had a better paying gig lined up.

I'm with you. I don't do this for the money. I work a good day job to pay for my toys in this hobby, and I want to use them. Plus I don't write/record so for me playing live is why I do this. I never even ask what we are getting paid when we play. I just want to go play and have fun. Never even thought about doing it for a living but I get that those who do want more $$.

Yup. I know my skill set and if Rascal Flats, Lincoln Brewster, Lionel Richie, Britney Spears, or Blake Shelton called me up and what to be their bass player, I wouldn't hesitate. But I doubt that hand is gonna get played this late in the game. I play for grins and goosebumps and laughs.

I know what you mean. I'm a middle aged guy who has no need to express himself via music, and just wants to play in a cover band with 3 other people, that we've all been friends for 20+ years.

No, NYE is their most profitable night of the year, they have to spread the love.

It's the only night of the year when mid-market musicians are able to demand real money. If you accept less, one could argue (and maybe I am) that you are messing up the leverage for many of your fellow musicians.

Former working musician me: No...Nor do I want to set a precedent that bands are willing to do this

Current hobbyist player me: A lot of these places can easily hire a DJ for the half the money of a band and have a great New Years Eve party. Band Gigs (in my area) are slowly evaporating over time so I want to get the gigs while they are still available because the future may be a whole different ball of wax

I try to live a precarious balance between being a current hobbyist player with my former working musician ethics - so No, I wouldnt take it but wouldnt be surprised if the place totally gets rid of bands altogether
