Crazy as it may sound, we actually pull out "Rocky Top" quite often (which is essentially a 2/4 polka with hillbilly lyrics), do the chorus in 3-part harmony and crowds eat it up.

Yeah and it doesn't hurt our band either that our lead guitarist is a freaking beast on that fast country chicken-pickin stuff. We give him about three lead rides on Rocky Top where he just wails and the crowd goes apepoopie.

Actually it defused a situation where this chick was being rude and trying to draw the whole evening down and make it about her. She was being loud and a PITA to not only the band but other patrons. Like I said, normally this sort of response is a bad idea, but it managed to work in this situation.

In my experience if you have the dance floor hopping making people thirsty and keeping them around, then you get a call back.

I think it's interesting that no matter what age, they will dance to the old worn out standards - Sally, brown eyed girl, margaritaville, etc. We may hate playing them, but they do get peep dancing.

I wish we could have some new, not so worn out standards.

I didn't conclude anything. I just said I wouldn't be surprised, because that would be Murphy's Law at work.

Like I said, normally this sort of response is a bad idea, but it managed to work in this situation.

There's been a number of threads on how to deal with requests for specific songs, but how about the opposite? . This one can happen anywhere/anytime/anygig - someone comes up to the stand and says:

"Play something we can dance to".

When you reply - what had you in mind/can you suggest something/any particular style, tempo, genre?. They say:

"I dunno, you decide!".

Sound familiar?.

I would have responded with...

"You start dancing mate and we'll play something that suits your style. You dance something that we can play to...Next!"
