Played an Ampeg PF-350 head today- not impressed

I jammed this through an Ampeg 6x10 today and was seriously disappointed. It didn't sound horrble, but boy was it QUIET. For 350 watts it was really wimpy. No punch or low end, and did I mention the lack of volume? I am going to have to try some other class D amps because so far i am NOT impressed.

If you crank the input gain it will sound good but after buying the pf350 a few weeks ago and having it fry on me on the first practice i dont have alot of trust in them anymore. I will keep the pf115 cab though because i love the sound and looks and will power it with my gk mbfusion as it sounds great through that cab. and is reliable. No more pf heads for me. If you want a class d amp i would give the mbfusion a try, it has incredible tone and power and wont burn out it 20 min. use. You usually get what you pay for in the long run.

If the gain wasn't set at 1 o'clock minimum, then you didn't hear the amp's potential...

That's ironic... I played the PF-350 through the SVT-410HLF and it thundered. Definitely loud enough for gig volume. As a previous poster said, if the gain is set any less than 1 or 2 o'clock the amp isn't even pushing itself, regardless of the position of the volume knob.

This is true with ALL of Ampegs solidstate amps, and most of the hybrids as well- you MUST crank that input gain way up, like to the 3 o clock position, in order to get what it's capable of.

+1 to gain over 1'oclock.. that's when it gets me excited.

Not only have I found these heads loud, they can really cut through the mix of a band if needed to. With the right eq I find I can hear myself better with my pf500 than I could with any other head I have had with the same power rating. It works great for me I don't need to be loud to hear myself anymore and my ears ring less after practice because of it.
I have read in another thread that another TB member did not like the sound of these heads as much through the ampeg 610, perhaps its not just the head you didn't like.

Same here. I sent it back for a refund.

Could have been an issue from the get go that made it sound odd if it died within hours.

Just a thought.
