Player Series P Bass- Holy Crap!!

I didn't either , but I got the buttercream p and happy I did. Light, resonate and sounds killer . I would sell my AM STDs for this Mexican bass in a minute. My #1 player on stage. Hope this helps ;-)

PS - the neck is killer and has a great profile

Are these Player Precision necks the same as the American Standard necks? Do you feel any difference at all? I have a Player Precision and it's outstanding but had the opportunity to get an American Standard but then I noticed the specs list a Modern C neck for that as well, just like the player precision.

Any insight? I'd rather get the Am Pro or Am Pro II for the 63 neck shape.

They're not the same - the American Standard neck is a little chunkier front to back and of a more even thickness, possibly due to the graphite rods. The Player tapers off a little towards the top. And of course there is the pau ferro fingerboard. I do believe that the profile is Modern C on both. The Player necks are every bit as comfortable to play, IMHO.

So the American Standard neck is a Modern C compared to the new Am Pro and Am Pro II which is the 1963 shape?

I played a Player Series P Bass yesterday at my local guitar shop, and was absolutely blown away. I've had two P basses in the past- an American Fender that was ok, and a G&L SB-1 that I never vibed with. This however, was something completely different. Still in shock. Seriously, please check these things out. Fender nailed it.

I had a similar experience.

I've used more than a few P basses but this bass had the best P bass tone I ever played. Absolutely outstanding. I tried several others were similar before and since but they didn't have the sound so I'm very glad I bought the great sounding one on the spot.

BTW, it's a Mustang PJ/LE.

Jakob T - Answered it for me. I prefer the Player necks.

I picked up my like new '18 Sonic Red Player Jazz last August and it has been my #1 home bass ever since.

To my ears, it has nice tones.
To my hands, a great playing neck.
To my soon-to-be-replaced shoulder, a reasonable weight.
To my eyes, a gorgeous red. Why Fender discontinued it & replaced it with orange is beyond me.

I love playing this bass.

Changed the strings to GHS Precision Flats, the pickguard to a black one, and called it done. May replace the pups with SD Apollo's or similar noiseless at some point. Still experimenting with different types of flats though.

I have some Fender Vintage 63 pickups sitting around I might throw in the Player bass. I like the stock pups but they lack bottom end and are more mids and highs. Not a bad thing just wouldn't have much presence on stage if playing really loud in metal or hard rock.

Just pulled the trigger on a Buttercream Player P bass. Already thinking i will change the pickguard to tort and the bridge to a vintage Fender type bent metal threaded thing. lol

I put the 63s in mine, upgraded the tuners and put a roasted maple neck on the bass. It went from being great for the money to being a serious contender with other bases that cost me over 2x as much. I've almost considered picking up another jazz bass from this same series.

Saw some posts here saying the Player P bass neck thickness front to back is more like that of an American Special than an American Standard.

I've been holding out for a used Special as I've heard so much about those slim necks,
but not many come up for sale in the UK, so I'm considering a Player.

Does anyone who owns a Player have Calipers and is able to measure the front to back neck thickness just before the first fret please? That would be really helpful to me and anyone else in the thread who may want to know. Thanks

How do you guys like (what i'm assuming) is the truss rod access at the headstock?

I actually love the truss rod access at the head stock. It makes it so much easier to get to. I have a couple American Fenders that I have to either remove the pickguard to get to the truss rod or just hope I don't scrap up the pickguard. I had a custom-made Jazz bass and I had them make a truss rod access like a lakland bass when there like a trench to put the wrench into for easier access. I don't know why more builders don't do what Ernie Bass Music Man does with the wheel adjuster. It makes life so much easier.

Fender actually did it on one iteration of the American Deluxe/Elite, I can't recall which. Then they stopped. Incomprehensible.
