I played a Player Series P Bass yesterday at my local guitar shop, and was absolutely blown away. I've had two P basses in the past- an American Fender that was ok, and a G&L SB-1 that I never vibed with. This however, was something completely different. Still in shock. Seriously, please check these things out. Fender nailed it.

I am quite sure it is awesome. I was so impressed by last year's MIM jazz bass that I bought one the next day after playing it.
I’m so glad I have all the P basses I need these days. With the manufacturing getting better and better for these basses, i know I would end up with a stable full of them.
I own one of the Butter cream p's and They are amazing , it has been my main player for live events since it's arrival and the bonus kicker is it's only 8.5 lbs ...LOVE IT ! The woody tone is tight and punchy and cuts thru the mix incredibly well. I had purchased this one about 3 weeks ago originally for my daughter as a beginner bass and after trying it out I told the wife I'm gonna use it instead . Jerk ! I know ...lol. I went back on the site I purchased from and they were sold out a week later ;-(.
Are the pickups on these things an improvement on the old Standards? I always found them to be kind of muddy/mushy tone-wise.
Yes they are now Alinco IV's and sound awesome these p's are worth every penny
Haha! I'd do the same. I'm totally sold on the P bass thing now. I played it through a V2 and now the Ampeg/P bass rig trend totally makes sense to me.
With *all* due respect, that combo is not a trend, it's an industry standard that's been established since the 60s. Specifically because it sounds awesome and is so versatile across so many styles!
The buttercream is so gorgeous, I can't find any in stock otherwise I'd order one. I have played this new series and the tone was great but I didn't care for the modern C neck. The profile is just a smidge too thin for me but it's still a very P-ish neck.

I guess I meant trend as in a consistent thing, like with a data trend. But as of now, If I could have one bass and one amp, it'd be an Ampeg and a P bass. Extremely versatile, and timeless as well
Yeah the 2017 pickups were like that. But I upgraded them to pure vintage 74s and this jazz bass sounds unreal. The new pickups are better. These MiMs are basically American standards now. Same parts. They play great.
My local stores don’t have any, I think they’re clearing out the Standards first or something. How do the Player necks compare to American Standards?
I agree on the Pro necks, they’re even better than the American Standard necks, but I think a lot of that has to do with the change in fret size.
Well I'm not an expert on the standard necks, but the Player series definitely have the skinniest neck of any P I've ever played. That being said, they're not jazz bass skinny, but for a P they're pretty small. It still feels like you're playing a P bass. It's a very comfortable "Modern C".
I'm gassing for a butter cream one. I have so many way more expensive basses. I think I'm going to bring a custom shop Fender with me to A-B, trying to talk myself OUT of it.

No biggee honestly. Works just as quick and you don't mar the guard .
