Playing And Singing

Music of the Night from Phantom of the Opera is my jam for learning to separate bass and vocals in my head. Good times!

I am able to sing and play the bass just with one song where I don´t have to look at the fretboard which is in my opinion the first step to do. I think the mere gazing at the fingers can confuse the brain.. but it depends, it´s all very individual...
+1, learn to play without looking at your fingers. An essential skill for singing bassists.

I have been the lead vocalist and the bass player for over forty years in every band I have worked with. I now play and sing primarily reggae. Here is how I approach learning a new song: 1. Learn the bass line and practice it until you can play it in your sleep. 2. Figure out the exact note in the pattern that the vocal starts on. This is crucial. It's the most confusing thing in terms of getting started. 3. Practice doing it all together until someone runs you out of the house! Reggae in particular is quite difficult. You can view my attempts on YouTube. Just look up " The Mau Mau Chaplains" there must be fifty videos of us on there. You can also watch the endless parade of different basses I use....Lol!
