Playing chords on a 4 string

I will say that, even when using a six-string bass, playing three-note chords almost always sounds better than four-note chords, which is why I've included fingerings for the chords without the 5ths whenever possible.

Interesting to hear this. So with inversions there's really not many extensions you can't hit on a 4 that you can hit on a 6?

(I'm trying to console myself that getting a 4 string and not getting a 5 string E-C on my recent custom was the right move)

A four is definitely more than enough for chordal playing, and I’m a 6-string player. Jeff Berlin is proof of that.

These are a great reference, thanks for fishing them out!

And yeah I think you're right. I love playing a four, and I love the bass I had made. So I'll keep going with what I have. One day maybe I'll need that high C but hopefully because I've hit some kind of limit in my playing, not because of GAS.

Just keep in mind that extra strings aren’t needed because you’ve hit a limit. There’s no mastery of any instrument no matter the string count. It’s just a different type of playing when you use a bass with more strings. I very rarely even use the additional five higher notes my bass has over a 4-string.

This is what I needed to hear. Thanks.

I wonder what this video was. Regardless the book in the second post is still available on Amazon. That’s good.

Oh it was this performance which has some pretty cool chord work in it, especially for 1970, pretty revolutionary creative improv

(Just in case this link eventually dies too, which I suppose they all will sooner or later; Jefferson Airplane "ballad of you and me and pooneil" live at the family dog 1970)

Oh hell yeah 17 year old post quote also delivers! Good memory. Thanks I'll give it a watch.

Geeze if only I remembered other things as well as cool music performance videos! Though Jack was pretty influencial to me as a bassist, especially at that time, his playing really spoke to me and kept me excited enough about music to get me through some really dark times. That recording is pretty raw and honestly the chording portions are pretty powerchordy, but that tone is to die for and it's all beautifully woven together for something invented on the spot, in a time when bass usually played more of a supporting role in rock music. In any case, happy friday!
