Playing Directly into Computer?

Let's say I live in an apartment. I want to play directly into my computer and headphones while having it record as if it's being recorded directly from an Ampeg, etc. How do I do this as easily and preferably as cheaply as possible?

Secondary question: For messing around with different tones and effects, is it better or more common to have HARDWARE devices like a Sansamp or whatever connected before going into the computer/recorder or is it better/more common to have such tones and effects via SOFTWARE on the computer itself that is recording?

1. question: buy an usb-interface with a HZ-input - most have it.
2. question: some top albums are recorded strictly ITB, using only software, other producers still love analog or outboard gear, it is a matter of taste, working style and convenience.

0 - answers are agnostic to wherever you live, an apartment, town house or castle.
1 - as suggested above, a good sound interface will preamp and condition your signal so it can be recorded in your computer.
2 - both valid options. Using a hardware pedal (bass-pedal-comp interface) will give you several years of consistent work, while a software-based effect will require updates and age with the computer. Best option is a mac (mac mini?). Software effects - to me - are much more powerful, infinite possibilities, largely available and a wide range of prices. I’d prefer software effects

A simple usb audio interface will let you plug your bass right in. There are good affordable options from focusrite, tascam, presonus, and others.

If you have some pedals you know you love, definitely record them. But I'd also look into plug-ins. You'll get more detailed control over EQ and effects, plus you can tweak 'em to your heart's content, vs hardware effects where you have to retrack if the effects don't end up working in the mix. There are also some great amp/cab simulators which open up a world of possibilities tone-wise.

USB interface to DAW, Cakewalk is a full featured free product with a number of decent Amp and effect plugin's. Cakewalk is PC only, if you have an Apple, then Garage Band will probably do what you need. The Presonus Audiobox is a solid entry level USB interface at $99. That would let you get a feel for what's out there, if you are not familiar with digital plugins and DAW recording, there is a learning curve. You can always upgrade when you have feel for what's out there and the capabilities.

I use a Focusrite Solo and GarageBand for my headphone practice. Pull up YouTube videos of the songs and play along. I also have recorded bass lines for friends using GarageBand. Works fine and was basically the cost of the Focusrite which was like $100.

I use a quad-core Apollo Twin | X for my Warm Audio WA-87r2 to record vocal sessions. Absolutely unreal sound, performance and technology. Apollo USB Interface > Every other USB interface

I see you mentioned Sansamp, there's a DI on the preamp (I think) I have two that I run right to a PC when goofing around. dirty/clean tracks any amp or preamp with a line out can work.

Maybe spend 20 bucks on used (working)Behringer Mixer or USB, if just starting out. Either one will give you the proper levels for recording. Then If your still doing it a year or so later, upgrade ! but skip over the mid prosumer gear 100 dollar ones and buy something like RME if your serious.

Because you did say cheap, One of my vintage stereos has a 1/4" Mic input... and RCA to 1/8" later were in the Box! Zero Dollars

Plenty of Free plugins to get you just about any tone you want.
