So, I've been putting together a little instrumental jazz combo, to play mostly fusion but also some post-bop and modal stuff. I've got a good drummer, I've got a decent guitarist, I've got a lead on some keys, and I consider myself to be a good enough bassist to do well (although I'm looking for a jazz bass teacher to improve). However, at the high school level all the good trumpet and sax players seem to already be in their school jazz bands and don't have time to do my little combo. The guitarist knows his chords but is not great with scales, so I'm not sure I can trust him with the melody all the time.
Can a jazz group do well using mostly keys to handle the melody, or do I need to start really digging for a horn?
