playing with a pick

Playing with a pick takes as much skill as playing with fingers..i really dont see why pick players get hated on? i think you look dorky playing with fingers just plucking along, yet i still know how to play with my fingers and a pick . i dont go around telling people there style is wrong.

That's how I built up my speed! I'd recommend The Trooper, Iron Maiden (the song), and Hallowed Be Thy Name to start out with. Once your speed is built up a bit, try Run to the Hills, Ghengis Khan, Invaders, Phantom of the Opera, or other such insanely fast Steve Harris parts.
Good Luck!

I always liked the song Losfer Words (Big 'Orra) as a fingerstyle exercise. The bass pretty much runs flat out the entire song.

As for turning the volume up and playing light, I do the exact opposite. I turn down and play as hard as I can to build strength and endurance. Plus I love the tone of a hard-driven bass/amp this gives. When I haven't been practicing though this really kills the fingertips.

Playing with a pick definitely has its place, but for me it came natural since I had played guitar for about 3 years before switching to bass. I'd say I'm a slightly better player fingerstyle, but I'm pretty even with both. I mostly switch to pick a) when the song calls for it tone or feel wise, or b) when I get tired :p
