Please clarify the "can't use" words.

Rule #2 states, "If what you have to say wouldn't be suited for network TV, don't post it here."
I recently got a warning for using a word that I though was extremely innocent and quite acceptable for use on network TV. And having done a search of Talkbass for that particular word I found 49 pages of threads it had been used in without apparent censure.

To be clear I used the word in question as a verb and not a noun so it wasn't name calling. I'm not bitching I'm looking for clarification of words beyond "the seven dirty words" that are unacceptable regardless of context .

I think the rule is pretty clear and it's really just about using common sense. Its not sensible or practical to provide a list of all unacceptable words. There will always be a grey area where words like the one you used fall into. Ok you got pulled up on it and others haven't. It's no big deal, different mods will have different views.

If I didn't feel I'd completely respected the TB rules and used adequate common sense I wouldn't be asking. So I should just let something I don't understand go rather than ask for clarification?

And I agree context often comes into play. It didn't seem to in this case though. I'm not completely ignorant of socially acceptable language and I am honestly confused here.

I just had a message from the OP and I think that he didn't overstep the line or break the spirit of the rules.
However used in a different way the same word could cause offence so I can see it from both sides.

I'm sure what we all want is a forum where we respect each other and are able to have free and constructive debates. I think that on the whole Talkbass DB achieves that and I wouldn't take offence at the mods message.

I know how you feel.. I seem to notice words covered in Asterisks in other posts, but occasionally I'll post something with an asterisk and a particular member of the TB police ribs me. We've had words before and I think he's a j***. A little power can cause some folks on here to become holier than thou. Gross negligence using profanity is one thing, but c'mon..

I agree, someone should put up a more detailed definition. It seems a little vague sometimes. ;)

I have received "citations" for not fully blocking out a cuss word, but see tons of pages every day that are not FULLY blocked out and nothing happens to those people. I think it is just if they catch it or not, I would like to think there is no "favoritism" hear on TB.

exactly. it is not feasible for us to read every single post, we rely a great deal on post reports from users.

A word showing up in 978 threads with 11 threads actually having it in the title is not a case of it being merely "overlooked". I have a legitimate question here but unfortunately anyone who matters has his PM turned off. I'd prefer not to be treading on egg shells doing this in public.

Wow. You're really wound up about this. Move on. Watch your language, regardless of what others are doing. I have a mouth that can make a sailor blush yet somehow I manage to type articulate posts without using profanity. Why skirt the gray area and push everyone's buttons? Just act like a responsible adult.

The sad thing is, most of us know who he's talking about. :/ Yet we're not allowed to criticize the mods, so I won't say anything more. :) We should be able to give mods infractions however, for over-infracting. Dont cha think?

Yes I do. I don't necessarily disagree with DrayMiles...I just wanted to keep this on track long enough to get an answer. It's pretty easy and convenient for a thread like this to get shut down without anything being resolved.

if you have complaints about an infraction / rule reminder you received use the 'contact us' button and provide specifics

I think the network TV thing as a guide should probably be done away with. I got really upset about an infraction I once got because it was tagged that I had posted a link to something inappropriate. There were no details as to what it was (which was something that youtube didn't consider inappropriate), and being a school teacher I didn't want that tag following me around on the internet. Not without a fair trial. :) Anyhow, thankfully I was able to get it removed.

Ya know, while I really don't like the moderation, there's a small part of me that appreciates what it does for this website. We have a great community here, and riff-raff is weeded out quickly. With some people being a little quicker than others on the draw, I think it helps to keep things cool and push away those we don't want here anyhow.

I do really wish we could discuss our discrepencies openly though. The mods aren't always right, and it would be nicer if things were a tad more democratic regarding some stuff.

Lastly, if I were to request a change in anything I'd request that they change the infraction notification to a simple number or symbol. "Infractions: 1" An email notification explaining the infraction is enough, without the need to post a vague reason on our talkbass homepage.
