Please help me decide on first bass - narrowed down to 2 Precisions

yes I play keys

i have the money for either of these so I want to get a standard recording bass that will be good forever. I don't want to start on or even own a cheap bass when I have 3 thousand dollar monitors and 25K in rack gear...Even if i do not take well to bass for some reason (which i doubt) I can have it around for others to play since I often collaborate. I have a really nice high end project studio so there is no harm in having a standard recording stand-by around.



I only by once. Buy quality, buy once. I learned that over the years. I am not a kid.

Seriously, you can't go wrong with either bass. It's been said a few times that AVRI's are like getting a Custom Shop bass at a fraction of the price. I've got a 57' a 62' and an Am Std. They are all great basses, but I think the 57' AVRI is the best. It sounds incredible. If I had to pick one to keep, it would easily be the 57.

You mentioned in a previous post that you thought the 62' was a just a copy. The Am Std is just a copy of the 62'...which is a copy of the 57', the first year of the split coil P.

I like the 57 a LOT too, in sunburst...but unfortunately it's not available from the few places I need to buy from.

p.s. that green is kinda ugly, but to me, good ugly. I love all those old P-bases in nasty 70s colors with the tortoise pick-guard.

Where do you need to buy from and why only limited to them?

Another thing to keep in mind is the nitro finish on the AVRI's vs. the poly on the MIA's. The poly is going to keep the bass looking newer for a long time. Most people that want nitro are looking for something that wears.

payment plan issue - going to do a 3 pay or a 5 pay or a 10 pay, regardless no one has it that offers a payment plan - only the white which i do not care for really...just not my style. The 62 is also on sale for LESS than an American standard at one of these places, making it even more enticing, but only in white. But, I can probably use that sale to bring the other place down, that has a 62 RI in sunburst.

Sweetwater will beat anybody else by quite a bit IME, just call them and ask. They will order you whatever you want though, so just because it's not on their site doesn't mean they can't get it.

Fender is redoing the AVRI line, so it seems that places are starting to blow them out to make room for the new ones.

well, thanks all...i am now more confused than when i started hahaha.

but I do appreciate all the info.

I don't care what anyone thinks, I really do like that jade and tortoise and that might be just what I get. I like those weird/ugly P-bass colors.

If not that, a sunburst 62 or 57.

I really like the AVRI '62's.

But they're a vintage purist's P-bass, to the point that they even have the old-school "threaded" saddles, backwards-geared tuners, and none of the modern upgrades that come on the Am Std.

Based on the OP's comments, I suspect the Am Std might be a better fit. The neck on the '62 is a wide/thin carve, and a full 1.75" at the nut. Pretty much the "anti-stingray". Also, as a studio loaner, those reverse tuners are liable to bother visiting bassists.

In contrast, the Am Standard is a pretty normal modern P: less neck dive thanks to the lightweight tuners, normal neck width, etc.

Here is one that's somewhat similar, it's the old Jade color from the 90s....a bit lighter. I like it!
