Please help me understand bass guts

"bass guts"   hilarious.

Okay, updated pic of the insides. I got the front of the pots as well as a close up of one of the volumes (they're both the same) and the tone (0748Q for volume and 0744Q for tone).

Yup, no preamp (but active pickups). One of the BQC variants would go right in there (as several others have recommended, I agree).

Yes, sorry, I tried to explain that but I probably tossed a word salad.

There are six holes because the bass originally was set up with five pots and a switch.
Volume - Blend - High - Mid - Low (and I believe the switch was a mid toggle: low mid, mid mid, high mid)

The factory pickups have been replaced with active EMG J pickups. The battery powers the active J pickups; the tone is passive. There -IS- a separate battery box, but it is not currently in use (I do not know if it works but since it's already carved out, I plan to route the battery back to the battery box when I update the tone/EQ controls).

...
Yeah, the bass body was designed for an on-board solution, so I'd like to give it one!

According to Yamaha manuals, the mid pot was a frequency selector and the switch a mid cut on-off. If I understand this correctly, it's either flat (off) or scooped a fixed ammount at a frequency determined by the mid cut knob. Weird set up.

“A25K” is a 25K audio-taper pot, so exactly what is spec’d for Active EMGs. You should be just fine throwing in an active EMG EQ preamp or really just about any other active EQ circuit after those volume controls
