Please help me understand the USB audio interface on Warwick Gnome iPro v2

Hi Fellow Bassbros,

I have connected my bass to my Warwick Gnome iPro V2, and then the Warwick Gnome iPro V2 to a speaker cab. So far so, good it works exactly as I'd expect an amplifer and bass cabinet to work.

Now I want to record my bass into an audio recording program (e.g. Audacity, or a DAW) via the "iPro" audio interface of the Gnome. So I've plugged a USB-B cable into the back of the Warwick iPro V2 (where it says "Output") and the other end of that cable (USB-A) into a spare USB port on my PC.

Windows installed some drivers, and two new audio devices showed up on my PC: "Microphone-4 USB Audio Device" and "Speakers 4 Microphone USB Audio Device".

I played my bass, expecting to be able to hear and record it in Audacity. However, Audacity can't hear my bass playing. Instead, whatever sounds are being made by my PC (e.g. system sounds, YouTube videos etc) are being played back through my bass cabinet!

So it seems like, instead of my Warwick iPro V2 acting as an audio input device to my PC, it's acting as an audio output device from the PC.

Is this what's supposed to happen? Have I completely misunderstanding the purpose of the iPro interface? Is it not supposed to take your bass signal from the Warwick Gnome and feed it into your PC? Or is my original understanding correct, and something is broken?

Here's what I done so far to try and fix the problem:
  • Ensured Audacity is set to use Microphone 4 (the new input that showed up on the PC) as the input device, and my usual speakers as the Output device.
  • Tried the other device listed in Audacity as the input.
  • Disabled, uninstalled and reinstalled Microphone 4 and Speakers 4.
  • Tried different USB ports on the PC.
  • Tried a different USB cable.
There's nothing in the Gnome iPro documentation that's of help. It just says it has a PC audio interface and nothing more. There are no instruction videos or other material from Warwick that seem to address the problem I'm experiencing.

Cool. Since we now know the USB interface appears to function as expected I'm going to ask a Mod to move this to the Recording Gear and Equipment forum, where you'll likely get more informed input on making it do what you need it to. I do have Audacity on my Windows box, but only really use it for capturing YouTube audio, and even that was way more convoluted to set up than I expected.
 
EDIT: I reread the original post and I think this might be an issue with the Warwick product’s routing. Unfortunately I’ve never heard of it before and I don’t use audacity so my suggestion might bot be what you need to resolve the issue. But I’ll leave it here all the same in case it becomes useful to you or someone else in the future. Good luck! 👍

It seems like what you need is a “loop back” program that can route the audio being played on your device back to itself. This is how streamers are able to capture the incoming audio from their video games or whatever whilst simultaneously capturing the voiceovers that they’re recording. This is also sometimes called “passthrough.”

While I haven’t used it in a long time, I used to use “Virtual Audio Cable” for this on my old windows machine. IIRC, it wasn’t too difficult to set up. I just followed the instructions on the website and get it set up.

Try device 19. It may be labeled speakers but according to the windows device info it also does recording with loop back.

That is probably what you’re after.

Windows can give things misleading names at times. Kinda cool you can play back as well as record if that’s the case.
