I have been using a Snark pedal tuner with much success for years.
Guitar Center had a $20 sale each; I cleaned out the store by getting
5 of them.
Gave 2 away, lost one at a gig, but the 2 remaining have been stellar.
I always use a power cord. Really inexpensive and accurate.

Is being more careful so that you don't keep snapping the necks of the clip on's out of the realm of possibility?
I mean, you like the clip on's ...you buy one built to take a hit and that force has to go somewhere, that somewhere is your headstock

I would say "get a Peterson Strobo Flip" 'cause I have one, and it's the stuff. But, Peterson doesn't make them anymore - and you can't have mine. But, whatever they replaced it with, should be a really good tuner - for anything (except your car). And, I hear that their clip-on tuners are the stuff, too.
I'll vouch for the Peterson StroboClip HD. I also have the StroboFlip, which works well, but the clip-on version is much more convenient, and portable.
I use it with my JMJ Mustang, clipped onto the thumb rest. NO problem with note-sensing anywhere on the fretboard. Super simple and accurate.
Arion Guitar / Bass tuner. have to be careful to switch to the right string, This have had 20 years paid 10 for it I was hesitant cause it was expensive, and it still is my reference tuner when changing strings , holds up against my Zoom built in, Boss, Snark and other clip ons. Some chromatics struggle this one hits it on the nose.
Great on batteries.

I'm not sure there is a one-size-fits all tuner. But for my money I've found Korg to be a good place to look. For clip-ons I really like the original Korg Pitchcrow. I think it's been replaced by the Pitchcrow-G. I'm not sure what the difference is. But the new version sells for about $30 while I bought the original for under $10. IMO, while popular, Snark and Boss tuners aren't accurate enough for me.
But one of my favorite all around tuners is the Korg CA-40, now replaced by the CA-50. Good mic and 1/4" cable in-out capability. Easy to read. I've also got a Korg Pitchblack pedal...
But when I gig I usually daisy-chain a CA-40 into a Pitchblack. The Pitchblack more or less serves as a mute, but also good confirmation. The CA-40 is easier to read in bright sunlight. I'll often chain it to my Fishman Platinum Pro EQ/DI that has it's own built in tuner, but the CA-40 is so accurate that's the one I look at for tuning. In fact, it is so accurate that I can intonate my guitars and basses with it. I just got a CA-50 for a little more than $20.

Sweetwater sells TC Electronic UniTune Clip Clip-on Chromatic Tuner. It does not tune all the strings at once like their more expensive model. But for 29 dollars its a good deal and works well. I believe Sweetwater made a deal with TC Electronics to make this model specific for them yet I am not positive on that.
I've had a number of tuners, pedal based, clip on, handheld, within fx units etc...
My problem is that although the clip on ones are convenient, they break or get lost - mainly break. I've had several Snarks and a Petersen that all broke(Peterson... 100 bucks I will never spend again). The little neck seems to be the weakest point. they also seem to suck up th batteries which doesn't impress the greenie in me.
Pedal tuners are robust but not convenient across all my instruments, especially acoustic ones, and always having to plug in is a nuisance. Obviously the same goes for tuners within effect units - great if I'm gigging or using the unit anyway, but not convenient otherwise.
Handheld ones are good for plugging in but lousy for a noisy room when trying to use the inbuilt mic.
The handiest so far has been the Boss app within my smart phone but have just gone to a dumb Nokia because I can't seem to stop looking at my browser and facebook when I have a minute to spare - a common problem it seems.
Yes I am being picky and should just suck it up and adapt to a few different methods but maybe there is a robust (metal?) clip on that I can use for everything or a pedal tuner that has a mic as good as the phone one or just buy an old Boss with the needle and put up with it.

Just get a Tablet from a Pawn Shop, download Pano Tuner to it, and a few other Music Apps...
no games, no facebook, nada but MUSIC stuff...and enjoy!!
The TC clip on is quite nice. When I worked at a music store, the Korg rep told us that most tuners approximate the last few cents to be on pitch so that the tuner is easier to use even if it is inaccurate. The TC measures small movements for intonation purposes. Sometimes it will measure a change if you just touch the instrument. The TC has a metal clip which bugs some because it can damage your finish, but that never bothered me. There is a cheaper model. Stay away from that one. The pedal version is great too. I have the mini polytune. Coming from a Boss TU, the TC is so much faster than the Boss.
I have used the latest TC Electronic Polytune clip on since it came out about 3 years ago and have never had any problems with it. It is strong and sturdy and always gives perfect tuning, if one can have perfect tuning that is!
I have a new six stringer.
I cannot mount the a Unitune on the bridges because this bass has single string bridges.
So I have done this!

As others have said... one of the tuners I have stuck on a headstock somewhere is the TC Unitune. It has a sturdy metal clip and I *think* a metal body too.
