Don't think I've posted in this part of the Forum before but I had an epiphany today regarding picks. Back in the day I was a large Gibson Heavy guy and that was great with steel rounds but they would wear and break. Over recent years and weekly gigging I went with Dunlop .88mm Nylons with a lighter touch. I've been swapping preamps and DIs but nothing really got me there. Today I picked up a random Dunlop Tortex 0.60mm which looked like it was going to be too crispy and harsh but the opposite was true. It was articulate, thick and warm and seemed to introduce some slight fur and growl. It removed the slightly metallic top I got with the Nylon which I'd been subconsciously trying to get rid of. I was playing lighter and freer than normal and the sound wasn't lacking. Wow.

I've been overlooking the importance of the right pick and the difference they make.

I still mostly use my fingers, but when I do use a pick it will be either the Dunlop Tortex .60mm or the Gravity .60mm acrylic pick, depending.

Actually these two have very close to the same amount of flexibility, though the do flex/feel slightly different due to different material, sound wise the Gravity acrylic pick got a bit brighter, somewhat glass like, attack, it also produce a very clean attack, with as good as no scratching noises.

Other than that, due to the way the grip is designed, a circle of raised knubs in the middle of the pick, it both got a really great grip, but at the same time is extremely easy to manipulate between your fingers, and turning the pick, if one should want to make use of the stiffer round corners, between riffs is no issue.

I'm given a free 2 mm Alice pick from buying a pack of their stainless bass strings, and I'll try it out later (likely today). I've found that a 0.75 mm Herco pick doesn't give me enough articulation for hard, fast playing, and I need to try either a harder pick or changing to the typewriter technique.

Since i've revised entirely my right hand technic based on Anthony Jackson one, i've discovered and added the pick to my bass playing (as guitarist in a previous life, i was aware of these strange little things)
I discovered, as mimicking Anthony that it could be a real boost during more energetic moments in tunes; plus having new shades of tones in my playing.
But i needed it to be easy to catch and let down during tunes.
As i've had a pick with small magnet inside from my guitarist life, an idea popped in my head: where could i add a magnet on my bass for my pick to stay available easily ? Second problem was the pick brand didn't exist anymore. I found a end-of-stock of 3 more on the web but that was all. And after some search, i found a manufacturer from Italy that has created picks with the same idea:

It doesn't work - the machined edge reduces brightness like a Big Stubby, and makes it a pick for players that doesn't want to sound like pick. For a bright, noticeably "pick" rock bass sound, I've found that a plain Jane ~1 mm celluloid pick works the best.

Back again to mostly playing with a pick, and a new favorite one, the Gravity .77mm acrylic pick.

Less flexible than what I previously have preferred, but gives a fuller sound, while still not exactly being too warm and mellow sound, and while still producing a pretty snappy attack.

That's a brilliant idea. I'd also add magnets all along the upper horn and inside the lower. I use a few different piks for different parts.
