PLEK'd

Has anyone mailed a bass to mike lull for the PLEK'D treatment? Is so, thoughts?

Bump for an interesting thread. If it was reasonable, I might send one of mine in for a PLEK/true pro setup. Uh...that is assuming he'll PLEK any bass, not just the ones he makes?

If you have a lull pre 2008, it's only $135!! for PLEK and set up. Great deal, that's why I'm throwing out a shout for anyone who's sent one in rather than buying one already set up.

I haven't had a bass plek'd but I have had 4 of my acoustic guitars done and it really made a difference in the playability and obtaining a low action.

I have 2 basses plek'd but not by Lull , I have no doubt he would do a stellar job though . Both of those instruments have the best setups I have ever played . Low , buzz free ,like butta ...

My Lakland is PLEK'd, but it was done in Chicago. The difference between this and the others in my family has me considering having the others done.

Ironically the only one of my basses that I didn't have him do is my Lull. I'm going to, but haven't gotten to it yet. The PLEK is amazing, and on a lesser instrument, or a nice one with fret wear you will notice the difference. I can't describe it, but you will feel it.

On a higher end instrument, with quality fretwork you might not notice the difference as much. I would wait until these instruments need some attention. (But I would certainly do it then).

My G&L and Lakland were both PLEK'd at the factory. They both have amazing fret work. I can tell a difference between them and the two basses I have that weren't PLEK'd.

A Plek job is not magic. Nor is it some technology that goes way beyond human skills. The steam drill has not beat John Henry yet. BOTH the Plek job AND a standard luthier neck job will cost about the same and will require a skilled operator for killer results. I had my Conklin 7 Pleked because it had a couple of buzzy high frets. Results came back amazing! I also had frets leveled and crowned on my high mileage Ken Smith 6 by the the local luthier. Note this bass had deep grooves worn in the frets from the strings! It ALSO came back looking like new and playing like butter for roughly the same money as a Plek job.

BUT, if you own a Lull and can get a Plek for half price, I'd urge you to DO IT! That's a bargain and a half, and you will NOT be sorry!

PS. I didn't trust shipping either and did a road trip to the plek machine rather than UPS.

I just had an Essex PJ Plek'd at crossroads guitar shop in VA and am very happy with the results. It had several high frets and now it plays like butter.

The laser technology itself comes in second to the fact that you're also getting a decent setup by a knowledgeable luthier. PLEK is invaluable for vintage instruments, though - many times it's a great way to avoid a refret.

I'm thinking at some point of doing this to my Squier VM P-bass, as I'm thinking this bass might be my main (for a good while at least). The only thing is I know of no shops in my area that do this, and I am reluctant to ship. Anyone know of any good shops in Philadelphia that do this?
Also, how much extra would it likely be for them to deal with seasonal fret sprout? And is setup always a part of the deal?
