Plugging into PA

i was thinking our bassist could plug into our PA but the PA we have now is really weak...dont ask..you will laugh...We were planning on getting a GOOD PA and Good cabs but i honestly dont know what too look for. Like how many cabs and how many watts out the amp..and how to wire the damn thing...i need the PA to get the vocals loud and handle the bass.

Can anyone help me look for something good.
Regarding the Speakers we can get some old skool cabs from my drummers father...so right now..its just basicaly choosing a PA.

first, i would suggest spending 40 bucks on yamaha's sound reinforcement manual, available at any guitar center.
then actually read it.
it will answer all your questions.
