Poll: Tone and Playability or look?

Everyone is going to say door #1, but we all know how much shopping is done with the eyes.

Tone and playability can be enhanced with strings and a good set-up. Looks can be improved with stickers. You don't have to choose!

Any, and I mean ANY mechanically sound bass can be made to play well and I think tone is a given. Most of us know what we want to hear when we plug in.

Looks matter more than people think. Most of us wouldn't pick up a bass we found unappealing.

Neither. I don't care how it plays, looks, or sounds. My only concern is does it impress the TB community? Can I contribute to multiple threads with just a carefully staged pic of my beloved "forever" bass that I just bought but is the best I've ever played? Will strangers on the internet comment on my bass with the drool-face emoji? These are important questions.

comes right down to it---gotta be playability and tone. I don't like ugly.

But really, this question of either/or does not really apply much, since most basses will give everyone a bit of both as they go looking for their preferences.

There is only that some basses look MORE attractive to personal taste, while tone between the choices does not seem to have that much of a wide chasm despite the hype among the different-brand-fans.

I think I've made the subconscious association leap. I now like the way Fender P basses look because I like the way Fender P basses sound and feel.

I guess it's no longer subconscious. What self discoveries will I make next?

Looks are important in the beginning...

Playability conjures the notion that your new love can do no wrong in your hands...

When Tone changes from pleasant to gnarly nagging, that's your cue to GAS and get a new one...

Feel and tone win. Except single cutaway basses... I know it's like a "liking broccoli or not" thing but I don't like 'em and would never own one regardless of how well it played.

It really has to have the total package. My Warwick Corvette is the ugliest piece I own but it sounds plektacular and besides beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Am I right?

Playability is number one. But it's not hard to find something aesthetically-pleasing that also plays well.
