Yeah... while it could be interesting to know how much power an amp puts out fully clipped, what the maximum wattage possible from that unit might be... it isn't really that applicable to the kinds of signals we're mainly going to be getting from them. I play an amp that's overdriven most of the time, but I don't think it's anywhere close to a square wave.

Well, while it's rather simple mind game to let an amplifier "virtually" fully clipped, in real practice the ratio between "clean" and "overdrive" is totally different from this.

For instance an amplifier with 300watt sine power 1% THD.

"clean" sine power: 300 watt
Fully "clipped" (square) power: 600 watt

With a bass guitar the profit of power will be totally different

audible "clean" MI power: lower than 100 watt
audible "clipped" power: starting around 50-100 watt (it depends), furthermore to obtain the same amount of power like sine power 1%THD then will demand for a very lot amount of THD>>1% respectively overdrive with a bass guitar. To come close to the 600 watt "square" power with a bass guitar would demand for very excessive overdrive, it's comparebale to the overdrive sound common with 6-string guitars.

MI signals and audio signals are very different from a sine wave thus they do different things with amplifiers than a sine wave.

Many of us computer gerks, who know and like digital technology for what it's good for and - and where it actually excels - still prefer their audio as purely analog as it's possible and/or practical to get it. We can mix and match to get the best of each. They're not mutually exclusive choices.

I really like trains - and sailboats too, but I sure as hell have no interest in crossing the Atlantic in one. For that I'll opt for air travel.

Actually the cards and readers were very much analog. Once the cards were read the electric contacts made where the holes were punched were interpreted and handled digitally after that.

Outside US and British countries it's sometimes hard to translate native language into "proper English".
Come on guys, lots of forefathers in the US came from the European continent where direct words are still more common. We all are living in a rather glabalization world with lots of accent. I envy folks who don't have need to be trained in a seccond language to speak with other people all around the world. At the other hand side I don't feel need to speak french language to speak to french people.
