Hey guys, I just have a slight concern with my Carvin BX500. Or atleast I'm assuming it is the amp because every time I turn the amp off, instead of the usual soft (almost) noiseless shutoff, I get a pop. It's not loud enough so that the speakers sound like it will blow or anything but there is still a decently audible pop. Any idea what is wrong?
http://www.amazon.com/Stabilant-5ml-Kit-Makes-30ml/dp/B001E50GQS Works a treat on dodgy ribbon cables and other connectors... get some 99% alcohol to mix it up. Kinda of expensive but its probably a lifetime supply for most folks.
So here are the guts of the Carvin bx500. Which ribbon cord should I clean and how do I pull them out because I tried to but it seems like it is stuck and I don't want to use too much force or else i may break the ends or something.
There are little tabs on both sides of the plastic connectors that hold them in place. Use something like a tiny screwdriver to push the tabs out of the way while you pull the ribbon out. EDIT: I don't own a BX500, but this is how all ribbon connectors on my amps and PA heads work.
Yes please take more detailed pics because I have a BX1200 that I want to clean up, even though I've had no issues in 3 years. I love my amp!
I would do that first. Can't hurt to talk to a tech and while you're at it, ask him about cleaning the connectors.
Mine recently started the same thing. I called Carvin and there is a known issue with a resistor that needs replacing. Call Carvin.
Do you happen to know if the bad resistor was used on the most recent version of circuit boards(Revision G)? Thank, Gerry
Tried wiggling it with more than gentle force, but no avail I should just call Carvin shouldn't I? I just have a church event tomorrow that I am slightly worried about, but hopefully it won't make popping sounds in the middle of a song (it has done that too, if I didn't mention before).
Trust me the cables all come out with no tabs to contend with. I wish I was there to help man. Don't be afraid to pull a bit on the cable and wiggle from the long edges. As others have stated above, There may be other resistor related problems etc. I can see the words REV. G on the board in your pictures. I believe the Rev. G is the most recent release of PC boards. It may or may not have the upgraded Resistors on it mentioned in above posts. A call to Carvin wouldn't hurt just to clear up some issues.
I had a similar problem with my BX500. This, and it would not always turn on without some coaxing (tapping on the chassis). I pulled the ribbon cables and cleaned them with Deoxit - same problem. I was not playing at the time, and became involved in other things, and let my warranty expire (entirely my fault). A word of advice - look at their web site and get informed on their service policy They charge a minimum service fee, which for the BX500 is $225 ! But, they also offer a trade-in or trade-up allowance. I paid the difference and got a BX1500. Now I have a amp that works perfectly, and will cover any of my future needs. I did love my BX500 - when it worked ! So far, so good on the BX1500 !
Thanks! The more extreme wiggling worked! Which ribbon cable should I clean (or blow with compressed air for now because I don't have the cleaner)?
