Popular Doom/Sludge Effects

It seems like no one can live without a fuzz pedal these days. Personally I've never made it work with my stuff, but everyone's pedal board here has a fuzz or "dirt" pedal, and a chorus.
Which ones? The Black Russian Big Muff is an inexpensive fuzz that works well with bass for one that wasn't made for bass. There is also a Bass Big Muff Pi that seems to be popular. I like my Electric Mistress Chorus/Flanger pedal, which wasn't really cheap, but technically you are getting two pedals in one.

You can ask my brethren in the "Stoner/Doom Bassists" thread over in the Bassists category. We all seem to like very similar pedals, but all have different gear. Some like octavers and some like their chorus/reverb. But one thing we all know and love would be fuzz.

One pedal a lot of us own (or have owned) is the Rat Tail. If you post on TalkBass, you don't need to ask why. A lot of us own the Bluebeard as well, which is another mystical pedal on this board.

Going off the top of my head, I know Laz (Lazarus.Bird) has the Bluebeard, the El Oso, and a Small Stone.

Ron (Bongripper/CSTVT/Consent) uses a lot of pedals as well. Far too many for me to ever remember. I recall him loving the Blackout Effectors Twosome (which I think was customized), as well as two Rats (Big Box Rat modded by FX Doctor and a White Face Rat modded by Keeley AND FX Doctor). Ron shows a lot of love for his Moog pedals, but not all of us can afford them. ;)

My buddy ampegfuzz uses many pedals so I had to check his user profile. Here are a few that would help: Green Big Muff, Morley Tel-Ray PWF, Woolly Mammoth, Proco Rat, Rat Tail, Grey Stache, and a Small Stone.

eyeball kid has a few videos on YouTube so I remember most of his pedals. He has two Fender Sublime, Bluebeard, Oxfuzz Bass, Earthbound Audio Supercollider, EHX Cathedral, Tall Font Russian, and a few others.

The Small Stone gets some sludge love, too. I've never used one personally.

Hopefully this helps!

There are definitely some expensive pedals in our part of TalkBass!

I highly recommend trying to get a used Rat Tail through the Classifieds, or a new one from Ryan. Basic price is $160 plus shipping and you can use it for more than just doom/sludge metal. This thing can be used in almost any band setting.

Lets see

Muffs (Bluebeard, Grey Stache, Wren & Cuff, Sovtek's, Muskets, Supercollider, etc.)
Rats (Rat Tail, Iron Pig, etc)
Super Fuzz
Mountainking Megalith
DOD 250
El Oso

There is a bunch more but those are pretty standard fuzz circuits that people are using.

Big 'Ol cabs and tubes too (even though alot of people are using solid state stuff)

What do you have for a rig right now? and what do you want to sound like? That will at least help us point you in the right direction.

Only plus shipping if outside the US (I can't see if the OP is in or out of the US on TB mobile).

Most of my sound comes from a P-bass and Sunn Beta Lead/Sunn 215BH cab, but I use effects, none of which are that expensive. I have an older Morley Distortion Wah, Sovtek Green Big Muff, Boss Phase Shifter, Boss chorus, Boss Bass OD, a cheap tuner, and an A/B/Y to run both channels on my amp since I have no footswitch. Nothing fancy, but the proof is in the sound. I'd love some more one-off pedals, but mortgage and kids come first. It can definatley get the job done on some cheaper pedals if you're on a budget.

I play doom/drone sludge and I use a Vintage Reissue RAT. Heavily modified based on beavis audio's Five.Knob.Rat mods. My favorite of the mods was moving the clipping diodes to the feedback loop and making them LEDs. Love it.

The only other pedal I want to try is the oxfuzz bass. It is basically a silicone fuzz face with a blend, and magic transistors.

Oxfuzz Bass is one of my all time favorite fuzz pedals.

I made the list! I'm somebody!

First off welcome to TB. Secondly what's your budget?

Cheap peds:
DOD 250 RI (sleep in a box)
Ibanez powerlead
Arion metal master
Joyo ultimate drive?? (Jury is still out)

If/when you have a bigger budget ($150 range) plenty of homegrown small business pedal builders to give love to. Fuzzrocious pedals and
Sanford and sonny bluebeard fuzz are high on the must have lists IMO.
