Yep, generally it's supposed to mean you are trying to do/be something that's it painfully obvious to others you can't pull off. Or even faking a certain type of click that you really aren't a part of.

But, I've often heard it used by people who are just jealous that you have some things/abilities that they would like to have but can't afford, or can't pull off.

Had it used on me when I had long hair and was in my twenties, and making other guys jealous by playing out in great band in and catching the eye of their girlfriends.

A poser is someone who does something because it's trendy and everybody else is doing it. Your not a poser if you actually like how you act and whatever else you do. Example: Someone wearing led zeppelin shirts because he/she see a few people who actually like the band wear them. Then you look at the guys cd's, scroll through his ipod etc and figure out there is no zeppelin and only flavor of the month music. You ask him/her why and he/she answers "led zeppelin is a band?".

I used to get into these arguments in Jr. high-school. It made perfect sense at the time

I know a bunch of people in college who still use the word poser in a derogatory way.

Then again, I also know a person who still says "True to the jew" which I happen to find very stupid. It just irks me in so many ways.

Let's say, just as an example, that you go to school wearing a Tommy Hilfiger shirt and it turns out that Tommy Hilfiger is a band. So you get picked on for the rest of the day and called a poser because you're wearing the shirt and you don't even listen to the band.

If some kid wants to wear a Led Zeppelin shirt just because he likes the shirt, he should be free to do that.
