Surely this thread is intended for the double bass side . . . isn't it?

You can often play the exact same thing in different positions with different fingerings. This would add to the sonic palette not subtract from it. The same note played in different positions will sound different but with the same fundamental. Call me crazy but I think this would be better for the overall sound of a "section".

I was in a class using the Simandl red book. Instructor insisted on everyone using the same fingering. It sounded much better. Learn to do many things possible on your instrument it only makes you better. Try playing scales down one string.
