That kind of fake mash-up of original source material isn’t strange, it’s contrived. It’s merely editing skills, not creativity. And, as others have pointed out on many of the examples in this thread, there’s not so much
‘strangeness’ with some of these covers, but just a bit of novelty or context shifting. All those ‘bluegrass’ versions of metal or rap have been concocted for years, in droves, purely manufactured. It became a cottage industry. I thought about posting Dolly Parton’s rendition of “Stairway To Heaven”, but upon listening to it again, there’s nothing ‘strange’ about it, it’s a heartfelt rendering on her part, with straight ahead acoustic country backing with an imaginative arrangement. Maybe some people might think it’s weird for her to cover Zeppelin, which is silly, but I’ve heard a synthpop version of “Jolene”, not strange, but different...
I’d even have to reappraise some of the stuff I posted earlier; looking back, some of it was more manufactured than natural, in terms of being truly off-kilter.

Not strange, just merely covers; while I don’t fall into that “The Jam were Who imitators” mindset, yes, they(well, Weller)were clearly inspired by The Who’s early sound, and in ‘64-‘66, there were a lot of Motown/Soul/R&B tunes in the ‘Oo’s setlist. It was big with the Mods, and other mod bands of the time. So, not surprising(they had covered Larry Williams’ “Slow Down”, which most people think of as a Beatles song, on their first album), but both a little gratuitous. I always wondered why they bothered with a worn-out chestnut like “MH”, when they were really coming into their own on the second album. What I did think rocked was their reworking of this old Supremes hit...
In the long run, their Beatles, Small Faces, and Kinks(they own “David Watts”)covers were far more interesting.

This project’s stock in trade is to do lounge, bossa nova, chill renditions of new wave and punk classics; sometimes it’s fresh, sometimes a little too cutesy. I would have loved to have posted their take on a certain DK’s song, but somebody would probably get their panties in a bunch, so you’d have to look it up.
