Post-punk / New Wave Bassists Club

Count me in too.

I'm only 21, in a band with 4 others who are aged 26-30, yet the common ground is the fact we are all huge late 70s-early 80s music fans. We're called Super 8 Cynics (Link Removed): there's only a short clip of one of our tracks on there (a vocal-less version) as we're a big hush hush at the moment. We're nearing completion of our self financed album which will hopefully get us somewhere! Anyway, have a listen.

Our synth player owns more albums than anybody I know, and he's got enough early Human League (Travelogue, Reproduction, etc), Bill Nelson, Magazine, early Ultravox (Ha! Ha! Ha! etc) to go around us all. He's spoilt for gear too, with him being a tech-nut, so we've got a pretty contemporary pop-rock sound with authentic 80s synths (Jupiter 8, Moog Rogue, Emax, Prophet 5 etc).

As my username suggests, I'm an out-the-closet Duranie- they don't get the credit they deserve, especially amongst people around my age who dismiss their music.

Yeah I really dig Severin's playing with the Banshees. He has a really interesting plucking style....up strokes with a pick. I've tried to play like that and it's more difficult than it looks!

Anyone know what Flanger pedal he used back then?

Another great player from the New Wave days was Mik Sweeney from Classix Nouveaux! A fretless master!!!

I'm pretty certain that he was using an MXR flanger, same as Mcgeoch.

Wire and early Gang of Four are major influences for me and my band.

Great taste my friend!

I just saw Gang of Four last night in Chicago... and am seeing Wire there in April...
:hyper:

The show last night was AWESOME... plenty of old stuff off the first and second albums... and their current bassist (name?) rocked it out. I was prepared to be disappointed, yet was not... one to mark off the list for sure.

Can I have a number? I spent all day watching the Trilogy DVD by the Cure, Stop Making Sense by the Talking Heads, and a Depeche Mode DVD.

I wish I would have grown up in my parents' era. My dad was all into INXS and Echo and the Bunnymen and my mom loved Duran Duran (specifically John Taylor ;)). They actually went to see Echo and the Bunnymen in Cleveland last March I believe.

The bassline from Other Voices by the Cure was one of my favorites in high school.

Progressive metal is taking up most of my playing time lately, but post-punk and new wave is where my heart is and I hope to start a post-punk/shoegaze project sometime soon with a friend.
